This Month's Featured Artist

Raul Speek

Raul Speek was born in Guantanamo, Cuba in 1958. He came to the UK in 1991 after working with the BBC's Arena programme filming the young political artists and writers of Cuba. Initially working in London with artists such as Gilbert and George and Tracey Emin he has now lived and worked in Solva, Pembrokeshire for the last seventeen years. He exhibits worldwide. In Cuba in order to be considered an artist individuals have to be able to paint using all medias, sculpt, make installations, play music and take part in street theatre. They are also expected, in return for their training, to teach widely in the community travelling the length and breadth of Cuba to do so. Raul has continued with this in the UK believing utterly that opening Art to young people on a practical level is vital to their development. More information and samples of his work can be seen on www.raulspeek.co.uk or on YouTube under Raul Speek or RaulSpeekArt. He is supported in this exhibition by photographic works created by his wife Heather Bennett for more information on her see www.heatherbennett.co.uk
